…How have I not reblogged this one yet? Sometimes the best way of snarking about something really is just to repeat it verbatim.

(Trigger warning for ableism, because…well…these are actual things that have been said to autistic people. Video is fully closed-captioned for those who need that; full transcript is also in the video description on the YouTube page.)

autistichedgehog:

[“My son has autism but he’s not autistic!”

So does he keep it in a jar on his shelf or something?]

No, I’m not kidding or exaggerating. This is the sort of shit drifting around the autism tag right now. Rhetoric like this.

This is why “person with autism” is such problematic language. Some parents try to defend it with claims that it’s because they see their child as a person first WHARGARBL. I suppose there’s something to be said for this person’s honesty.

Please note that I’m not saying autistic people shouldn’t define themselves as “people with autism” if they so choose. But allistic people have no right to dictate what language gets applied to us. Whether they realize it or not, when they talk about “people with autism” a part of them is trying to separate autism from person, as if autism is some parasite that has taken up residence in their child’s body rather than a very real part of their child.

This is a genuine—though slightly paraphrased—quote from a person who honestly believes having autism and being autistic are two distinct things. That attitude is vicious and harmful, so when you see autistics speak out against person-first language, know that this is why.

(Oops…I accidentally queued the wrong post from autistichedgehog last night and didn’t...

(Oops…I accidentally queued the wrong post from autistichedgehog last night and didn’t notice till this morning!

I so want to do something playing on the syntactic ambiguity of the oft-encountered “I love a person with autism.” Namely, the fact that “with” can be read as a dependent of “love” rather than of “person.”

“I love a person with autism. He’s allistic, but I love him with all my autism.”

Perhaps I’m weird, but whenever I see all the “light it up blue” stuff promoted so heavily for autism awareness— particularly when it’s all about turning stuff blue, and barely has any sort of indication that it has a thing to do with autism whatsoever— this is where my mind immediately goes.

But maybe it’s just because I’m the sort of autistic dork who was spending way too much time with Super Nintendo games in the ’90s. I dunno.

It continues to amaze me how many people don’t grasp that autistic children, miracle of miracles, grow up into autistic adults!

I mean, really. What’s supposed to happen? We disappear at age 18? We’re ~magically~ cured the exact moment that adulthood strikes? We’re in a perpetual Peter Pan state and stay childlike even after age 18? (Though granted, that last one would explain a lot about all the patronizing comments I see toward autistic adults…)
